Then, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Ankara Hasanthi Urugodawatte Dissanayake collaborated with the Ministry of Tourism of his country and introduced his country in Turkey. I started working at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Ankara on November 1, 2022. On December 27, 2022, I presented my Letter of Credence to President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan. This adaptation was easy in Ankara. Because I found many similarities between Turkey and Sri Lanka. These are as follows; In both countries, people are family oriented. Children live in their parents’ homes until they get married. (except when they go to other cities from home for their education or work) People in both countries are helpful and friendly. Neighbors are important and there are close relationships with neighbors. Elderly people are respected. Guests are treated very well. Both countries were important trading centers of the ancient silk routes; T\u00fcrkiye was on the Land Silk Road and Sri Lanka was on the Maritime Silk Road. I loved Turkey for these and similar reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What kind of a destination do Sri Lankan citizens see Turkey as? How many people come a year?<\/strong> Tourist arrivals from Sri Lanka to Turkey are not very high. Because due to high visa fees, it is not among the choices. Indeed, T\u00fcrkiye visa fees are extremely high. It is even higher than the Schengen visa. That’s why my citizens have to pay these fees. Additionally, high rates of visa rejection also affect arrival rates. and there have been numerous visa denials since the beginning of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where does a Sri Lankan citizen go when he comes to Turkey as a tourist? Which cities do they prefer?<\/strong> It’s not a choice; It’s about places promoted by the Turkish travel industry. That’s why most people come with organized tours promoted by Turkish travel agencies. Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale are in the first places. Turkey has many more instruments in terms of both nature and historical heritage. However, there are barriers to language, high transportation cost, discouraging attitude of local people and independent travel. These prevent us from enjoying Turkey more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Were THY’s direct flights to Sri Lanka a spark?<\/strong> I should point out that Turkish Airlines’ direct flights between Colombo and Istanbul, starting with 4 flights per week on October 30, 2023, and increasing them to 6 flights per week from mid-May 2024, is a good move to promote tourism in both directions. As the Sri Lankan Embassy in Ankara, we supported Mr. Fatih Bozkurt, Country Director for Sri Lanka \/Maldives, for the important role he played in making direct flights from Istanbul to Colombo possible after 10 years of operation in Sri Lanka. In addition to THY, Jazeera Airways and Qatar Airlines also have flights to our country. These are the other two airlines used by tourists. Turkey has so many layers of cultural and heritage diversity compared to most countries in the world and is truly a treasure trove for anyone interested in anthropology and archaeology. I like to visit these places in my spare time. I just hope some of these places create more awareness and better access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What do we find interesting in Turkey?<\/strong> I was very impressed by the cleanliness of the country. I noticed that there is a lot of diversity in terms of customs and behaviors from cities to villages, east to west and north to south. I never thought there could be such diversity in a country that defines itself as homogeneous. These include dressing style, greetings, eating habits, how women and girls are treated in society, etc. is included.
